CLIMATE-PROOF BABIES

CONCEPT | CREATION | PHOTOGRAPHY | SPECULATIVE DESIGN

The impact of climate change makes our future uncertain and the current design of the human body will not survive these changes. What if we redesign the human body? With the possibility of ‘designer babies’ we could design our babies to be climate-proof. Through combining the DNA of another species with human DNA we could take advantage of the qualities that help them survive climate changes. This photo series represent examples of how climate proof babies could look.

The ears of a Fennec Fox help to dissipate body heat so that the body stays cooler

Combining DNA with a Himalayan jumping spider makes survival easier with less oxygen

Climate-Proof Babies offer a new perspective on the complex issue of having babies in relation to climate change. It opens the dialogue by presenting and questioning a particular vision of genetic modification of human bodies. Further questioning the responsibility of having children, considering their potential future. By setting conditions for the eligibility of climate-proof babies, the dialogue becomes an ethical dilemma. Parents are analysed for their climate awareness and become more aware of how their behaviour affects the future of their children.
